Air conditioner energy consumption
AIR CONDITIONER ENERGY CONSUMPTION:
Offices contain many unnoticed heat sources. Every switched-on computer, printer and copier releases heat that the air conditioner must handle. Switch equipment on only when it is needed and you can save twice over.
A conventional split unit may be classed D or E, while an inverter air conditioner is commonly class A or B and is much more energy efficient. An inverter unit adapts its output to the preset room temperature and gradually increases or reduces power according to the actual cooling or heating demand. A conventional unit is more like a light switch: it turns on and runs at full power.
If a conventional split unit needs 50% of its maximum cooling capacity, it runs at 100% for 30 minutes and the compressor stops for 30 minutes within one hour. An inverter unit runs for 60 minutes at 50% output, when its efficiency is better. Once the desired temperature is reached, it reduces compressor speed. This can save about 44% energy compared with a conventional solution.
Air conditioner efficiency is shown by the COP value. This quotient indicates how many units of cooling output are obtained from one unit of electricity. The higher the value, the more efficient the unit. An average unit operates at a COP of 2-3 under well-sized conditions, while a higher-quality unit can reach 4.4.
A poorly designed or incorrectly sized system can cause a high electricity bill. Consumption depends on room volume, walls and window size, so choose a unit with suitable capacity and consider the orientation of glazed surfaces.
Consumption increases when doors are opened frequently, windows are left open, large glazed areas receive strong sunlight, insulation is inadequate or the difference between outdoor and indoor temperature is too large. For a room with large west- or south-facing windows, shading the glass is often more economical than simply increasing air conditioner capacity.
The heat produced by people in the room, usually around 100 watts per person, should also be considered. Environmental organisations recommend energy-efficient models that do not use climate-damaging refrigerants. Switch the air conditioner on mainly during the warm part of the day and leave windows open at night when possible. Before reaching for the remote, cross-ventilation can significantly improve how the temperature feels.
